Because of its loose structure, sand does not hold on to nutrients well. Water runs through sand very easily, washing away nutrients with it. For this reason, it is important to use a timed-release fertilizer that won’t wash through the soil before plants can make use of it. It is also important to fertilize sandy soil more often than you might other soil types. Sandy soil also dries out quickly, so it’s important to cover it with mulch to slow down evaporation of moisture from the soil’s surface.
