Moving your precious seedlings into the garden is one of the most nerve-wracking times of the growing season. You don’t want to be too hard on them, but you also don’t want to baby them. Follow these short steps for peace of mind and happy, healthy plants.

Step 1:

For vegetable & herb seedlings till the soil a few weeks before planting, enriching with PRO-MIX® Organic Vegetable & Herb Mix, for other seedlings we recommend PRO-MIX® Garden Mix. Tilling the soil will fool weeds into germinating early. You can then pull them out to reduce competition with your seedlings.

Step 2:

Two weeks before you’re ready to transplant, “harden” your new seedlings by taking them outdoors for a few hours each day, or by placing them in a cold frame. Do not take them outside in sub-zero weather.

Step 3:

Once there is no longer any risk of frost, take the seedlings out of their pots and plant them into the garden. Use Plant-Prod® Ultimate Starter Fertilizer 10-52-10 to reduce the chance of transplant shock, and to encourage great root development.  A healthy root system will result in a strong healthy plant.

Step 4:

Gently water on a regular basis and feed with a high quality plant specific fertilizer, such as Plant-Prod Tomato & Vegetable Water Soluble Fertilizer 15-15-30.
